JAKARTA, 3 NOVEMBER 2020 – NSLIC staff took part in a training on gender and Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP), discussing its content and application to NSLIC programming. The training was delivered by Alina Meyer, one of NSLIC’s Gender Advisors. The FIAP, introduced in 2017 after extensive public consultation, sets out Canada’s feminist approach to all its programming. It is a feminist, innovative and progressive policy document. The framing of Canada’s international assistance policy as feminist is new, and relatively rare in the global arena: it is one of few international policy commitments in the world to label itself as “feminist.”
It has five main areas – Human Dignity, Peace and Security, Inclusive Governance, Environment and Climate Actions, and Growth that Works for Everyone – all of which can be connected to NSLIC, but one of which is especially salient to our program – Growth that Works for Everyone.
The training focused on ensuring all NSLIC staff have a shared understanding of basic gender concepts and terminology, and then building upon this, a familiarity with the FIAP policy and its application to NSLIC programming. It aimed to help staff understand the linkages between gender and their work, as well as aiding staff to acquire the tools, resources and knowledge to understand how they can concretely incorporate FIAP and gender equality into their work.
Interestingly, a similar process to that which Global Affairs Canada undertook when it created the FIAP is now being undertaken with respect to the development of a “Feminist Foreign Policy.” Public consultations are currently underway, and civil society organizations have been invited to submit a brief to the consultation. Hopefully this new Feminist Foreign Policy will serve to strengthen and root the FIAP even further as a tool for Canada’s international programming- so the FIAP is here to stay and will continue to underpin Canada’s work in Indonesia and globally.
