Brown rice and black rice are the main commodities developed in the Sadaniang area, Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan Province through the second phase of the Responsive Innovation Fund (RIF) program. In addition to developing environmentally friendly agricultural cultivation, the RIF program also provided training in processing derivative products such as brown rice cookies – a delicious and highly nutritious snack.
This is a story about Dewi, a member of the Women Farmers Group in Sekabuk Village, Sadaniang District, who received training from the RIF program in 2019. In addition to taking care of her family, Dewi sometimes works in the rice fields to help her husband who is a farmer. This mother of three children gained new knowledge and skills from the derivative product training provided by the RIF program. After attending a training in making cookies made from brown rice, Dewi tried to practice it at home. Initially she was hesitant, but with a strong determination to be able to help the family’s economy, Dewi began to sell her homemade brown rice cookies.
Dewi’s business began in 2020. She managed to sell 35 kg of brown rice cookies during Eid Al-Fitr and 15 kg at Christmas celebrations. She also made a net profit of around 30% to 40% of the initial capital. From the results of selling cookies, Dewi is able to help the family’s income, though minimally. She feels proud of her small business. Dewi markets her products through partners, close family, and friends in several area.
Assisted by the RIF program team, Dewi is currently in the process of obtaining a Licensing of Home Industry Products (Perizinan Produk Industri Rumah Tangga or PIRT) and Halal certifications for the production of her brown rice cookies. “The PIRT certification which is currently being processed will later increase the sale value of my brown rice derivative products,” she explained.
Dewi’s brown rice cookies will be marketed online by the Joint Village-Owned Enterprises (Bumdesma). Dewi hopes that her small business can continue to grow and be able to lift her family’s economy.
